NY AG: Compensation Coming For New Yorkers Scammed Using Western Union Wire Services

NEW YORK – The State Attorney General’s Office says residents may now apply for compensation from a $586 million national fund if they were deceived into sending payments to scammers using Western Union’s wire transfer services.

This decision affects residents who  reported to Western Union or to the Attorney General’s Office that they had been the victim of a scam using Western Union may receive a claim form in the mail.

“I’m pleased that this fund will allow thousands of New York fraud victims to receive the compensation they deserve,” said Attorney General Schneiderman“I encourage New Yorkers to remain vigilant when receiving solicitations and report potential fraud to my office. We will continue to work with companies to improve their anti-fraud efforts and protect consumers from scam artists.”

The funds available to scam victims was born from a deal involving AG  Schneiderman, 49 other states, and the District of Columbia with Western Union in January 2017.

The claim form will be sent from the settlement administrator in the next two weeks and will contain instructions explaining how consumers may file their claim to receive compensation.
