Dunkirk Police Seize Four Pounds Of Drugs, Cash In Traffic Stop

DUNKIRK – Three people were arrested Saturday after Dunkirk Police say they seized more than four pounds of marijuana, with an approximate street value of $8,000, during a traffic stop at the intersection of W. 6th and Swan Streets. 

Jessie M. Melendez, 32, Dunkirk, reportedly failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of W. 5th and Swan Streets. At that time, Dunkirk Police say an officer observed a large quantity of high-quality marijuana packaged in large clear plastic bags that were in plain view on the rear floor of the vehicle.

Subsequently, Melendez, Jonathan R. Rodrigez, 31, and Luis A. Sanchez, 34, both of Dunkirk, NY were all charged with 2nd degree criminal possession of marijuana, a class D Felony.



Melendez was additionally charged with third degree aggravated unlicensed operation, failure to stop at sign and unsafe tires. In addition to the marijuana, a significant amount of U.S. Currency was seized from the suspects.

Melendez was arraigned in Dunkirk City Court in front of Judge Kuzdale on Sunday January 14, 2018 and was ordered held without bail. Jonathan Rodriguez was arraigned and bail was set at $10,000 cash / $20,000 property. Luis Sanchez was arraigned and bail was set at $7,500 cash / $15,000 property.

All three were transported to the Chautauqua County Jail after arraignment.

  1. How much currency was seized? I ask because they like make it sound bigger than it really is. Was it a couple thousand? Couple hundred? Big difference. And 4 pounds is nothing these days. As they had them stopped for 4 pounds 2,000 pounds drove by them. Trust me. It’s everywhere. It’s a harmless herb that’s becoming legal in many states. Seize 4 pounds of meth and we’d be impressed.
