Sheriff’s Deputy Starflighted Following Head On Vehicle Crash

ARKWRIGHT – A Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Deputy was Starflighted following a head-on vehicle crash with injury near the corner of Straight and Center Roads, according to county dispatch.

Officals said the deputy, later identified as 29-year-old Joseph Hallmark, was injured in the neck area. The driver of the other vehicle, 36-year-old Theona Szumigala of Fredonia, was taken to Brooks Memorial Hospital for minor injuries.

Deputies said Szumigala’s vehicle struck the patrol car in the middle of the intersection. Both went off the roadway following the collision.

Sheridan Fire Crews, Chautauqua County EMS and the county’s Emergency Services responded to the scene just before 9 a.m.

New York State Police and the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office was also on scene.

The county’s accident reconstruction team was called to reconstruct the accident scene. Police said the crash remains under investigation.
