First Defense: Sleet To Rain This Afternoon, Back To Snow For Wednesday

JAMESTOWN – As we’ve been advising, sleet and freezing rain have been the story this morning across the Southern Tier.

The National Weather Service maintains the Winter Weather Advisory for all of Western New York until 10 PM this evening.

Sleet continues in areas off to the east and north but the majority of the area has transitioned over to rain for the afternoon. There could be some pockets of heavier rain but we don’t expect any flooding concerns with the rain.

As colder air works back in tonight, rain will make one more changeover to snow for Wednesday. The winds also start to pick up, leading to some wind gusts near 50 MPH at times tomorrow. For that, a Wind Advisory will be going into effect at 1 AM tonight and running through 10 PM Wednesday for all of Western New York.

We’re likely looking at about 2 to 4 inches of snowfall through Wednesday. Some pockets upwards of 6 inches are likely but the heaviest amount of the snow will miss us to the east.

A brief warmup is likely by the end of the workweek as temps will flirt around 40 both Friday and Saturday before we go back into the 20’s for highs next week.
