FREDONIA – Presidents Day protests will happen nationwide Monday in response to President Donald Trump’s national disaster declaration at the U.S.-Mexico border.

A noon protest is scheduled in Fredonia at Barker Commons near the Village Hall.

Tina Rausa, Co-Chair of the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Women’s Action Group, the group hosting the gathering, told WNYNewsNow that the situation at the border is a humanitarian crisis precipitated by instability in Central America, not a national emergency.

“There are 200 demonstrations and protests happening today at noon. We feel it is very important to coordinate the time these things are happening because it shows unity, it shows organization and it shows strength,” said Rausa. “We recognize the majority of the people in this country do not want this wall which is environmentally irresponsible, it costs money that could be used for humanitarian purposes in the United States and not just to welcome immigrants, and the quote on quote ‘facts’ that President Trump is reiterating over and over again are erroneous.”

Rausa argues the President has set a dangerous precedent in issuing the order, and she labeled it as an “abuse of power.”

The Co-Chair says her group expects 80 protestors to be in attendance.
