LAKEWOOD – A Lakewood woman and former Democratic leader of the Chautauqua County Legislature announced on Friday that she is considering a run for the open New York State Senate seat that will be vacated by Senator Cathy Young (R-Olean).
In 1992, Nancy Bargar narrowly lost in a State Senate bid. Bargar also ran unsuccessfully in 1994 and 2005. Bargar also lost to Assemblyman Andy Goodell in 2010.
Bargar served 10 years as a member of the Chautauqua County Legislature, holding various leadership roles.
“I’m passionate about the area where I live and about public policy,” Bargar said. “I look forward to a thoughtful conversation with fellow activists about who might be the best candidate.”
Bargar, for the last five years, has pushed to save a Civil War Memorial in Little Valley. Bargar also previously pushed for the cleanup of county tire dumps and the ban on smoking in pubic places. In addition, Bargar is a State Judicial Delegate for Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Niagara, Orleans and Wyoming Counties.
In 2015, Bargar was named Chautauqua County’s “Democrat of the Year.” Bargar also serves on the board of the regional Democratic Women of the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes.
