WASHINGTON – After months of mulling a presidential bid, former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced Tuesday he is not seeking the Democratic nomination, but will focus his efforts on ousting President Donald Trump.

Bloomberg vowed to continue to address climate change and gun violence amid polling that shows former Vice President Joe Biden may be the perceived front-runner if he announces his candidacy.

The former Mayor said Democrats need to unite behind a strong candidate who can defeat Trump. He cautioned that the Democrats need to steer clear of going to far left.

“It’s essential that we nominate a Democrat who will be in the strongest position to defeat Donald Trump and bring our country back together,” he wrote. “We cannot allow the primary process to drag the party to an extreme that would diminish our chances in the general election and translate into ‘Four More Years.’ ”

Bloomberg was considered a strong candidate by observers, but he said he was “clear-eyed” about winning in  a crowded field and that he and Biden shared many views so that there is only room for one moderate in the field.
