MAYVILLE – The Chautauqua County Republican Party endorsed Chautauqua County Executive George Borrello as their candidate to fill New York State Senator Cathy Young’s vacated seat Wednesday night.

Borrello in an interview with WNYNewsNow earlier Wednesday said he is ready to take the next step to serve the people of Chautauqua County and the 57th district.

“This is not about me personally and having the title of Senator; this is about ensuring that we have good representation,” said Borrello.

On Tuesday, Borrello was endorsed for the seat by the Chautauqua County Conservative Party.

“There are dark times in Albany right now,” said Borrello. “I think the things we are seeing there is an outrage for the vast majority of people throughout Chautauqua County and the 57th district.”

Borrello said if he is chosen as the candidate and elected he will use one of his most valuable skills: cooperating with others.

“We need a strong voice there,” explained Borrello. “Not just a bull in the china shop, we need somebody who is going to be able to develop good relationships, develop coalitions on the other side of the aisle and ultimately get things done.”

Former New York Senator Cathy Young began her new job as director of Cornell University’s Center of Excellence for Food and Agriculture earlier this week.

The 57th District consists of Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Allegany Counties and seven towns in Livingston County.

Borrello was one of several names at the center of political discussions, including Assembly members Andy Goodell and Joe Giglio.

So far on the Democratic side only former Chautauqua County Legislator Nancy Bargar has expressed interest publicly.

New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo will likely call a special election after April 6th, according to new rules passed by State Lawmakers earlier this year.

If the Governor does not call a special election, the Chautauqua County Board of Elections said the position will remain vacant until this November’s general election.

Whoever is chosen as the district wide candidate will then have to win over the other republican parties in Cattaraugus, Allegany and Livingston Counties. Borrello said he will be meeting with other district Republicans this week to talk more about his campaign bid.
