IRVING – Chautauqua County Executive George Borrello announced Monday he has submitted double the amount of required signatures, securing the petitions needed to run for New York State Senate on the Independence, Conservative and Republican Party lines.
Borrello is seeking the office of New York State Senate to fill the 57th District’s vacant seat after former Senator Cathy Young resigned last month.
“I’m running for Senate to represent our shared values and fight for the growth and opportunities our communities need and deserve,” Borrello said. “As someone with experience as a small business owner, County Legislator and County Executive, I’ve worked to go above and beyond expectations and deliver real results.”
Borrello was elected Chautauqua County Executive in 2017 with nearly 64 percent of the vote in the county.
In his first 100 days as County Executive, Borrello met with 107 local businesses and groups to hear needs from the people. As Executive, he’s championed more efficient government, attacked blight in the community and delivered tax cuts for families and businesses.
“I’ve seen firsthand by working with her that Senator Young set a high bar for public service, and our next State Senator needs to be prepared for the tall order of following in her footsteps,” Borrello explained. “In the weeks and months ahead I look forward to showing that I’m the candidate best suited to carry on her legacy while forging a new path forward for the Southern Tier and Western New York.”
Prior to becoming County Executive, Borrello was a longtime Chautauqua County Legislator, where he chaired the Planning and Economic Development Committee, served as Vice-Chair of the Audit and Control Committee and was a founding member of the Lake Erie Management Commission and its first chairman.
Born and raised in northern Chautauqua County, Borrello started his own business in his 20’s providing products and services to the hospitality businesses across the country and grew it to a successful, nationally recognized supplier to the industry.
The candidate plans to hold a formal kick-off announcement in the near future.
District Democrats have backed 22-year-old Austin Morgan who is a Cornell University Student and Town of Freedom native.
Peitions to run for the seat are due Thursday, April 4, 2019.
