Few Rain And Snow Showers This Afternoon; Spring Warmth Returns This Week

JAMESTOWN – After a rough night last night with severe thunderstorms barreling through the region with damaging winds and large hail, we’re back to a winter-type chill to kick off the new workweek.

Scattered rain and snow showers will continue throughout the afternoon today. The good news here is the snow is rather wet and is not all that “stickable”. If anything, less than an inch of overall wet snow accumulation. That’s about it.

Temperatures today are running nearly 20 degrees below average thanks to a west wind and a Cold front that moved on through during the overnight. Most spots will not make it out of the upper 30s today.

We will warm back up into the 50s and 60s come Tuesday and Wednesday and we’ll make a good run at 70 by Thursday! There is a chance for scattered showers nearly each and every day this week but it will not be all-day rain.

Storm Spotter Training: The National Weather Service in Buffalo will be conducting their first ever online training class on Tuesday, May 2 at 7:00 PM. For the online training, you do need to preregister as spots for the online are limited. You can register your spot a www.weather.gov/buf/skywarn

Attendees will learn many topics to becoming a trained storm spotter, such as identifying storm structure, basic meteorology relating to severe convection (severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, etc),  severe weather safety, and proper reporting techniques.

I encourage everyone to attend a training session; we are in desperate need of more trained spotters. What many people may not know is that spotters actually contribute to the warning process. Remember, Doppler radar looks above the ground; it’s only spotters who see what is happening down at the ground.
