WESTERN NEW YORK – Everyone hates it, answering the phone only to hear some pre-recorded message.

The Federal Communications Commission wants to help end these so-called “robo-calls.

The agency’s proposal would give phone companies authority to block the calls by default.

That means you wouldn’t have to do anything, you just wouldn’t receive the calls anymore.

The technology to do this already exists, but companies have not released their solutions over fears they could be considered illegal.

If approved, the FCC’s proposal would squash those fears. It could take effect as early as later this year.

One study says Americans received more than 26 billion robo-calls last year. That’s almost twice as many as in 2017.
