First Defense: Another Severe Weather Threat Saturday Afternoon

JAMESTOWN – After a Cold front passage that moved through yesterday, temperatures have have came down along with the humidity but more showers and storms will be coming our way on Saturday and some of them could be strong to severe.

The NOAA Storm Prediction Center has outlined all of Western New York and Northwestern Pennsylvania under a standard Slight Risk (level 2 out of 5) for severe thunderstorms Saturday afternoon and early Saturday evening.

A warm front will push through the region on Saturday, spiking temps back into the upper 70’s to lower 80’s through the day. The humidity will also be on the rise once again, not only adding that noticeable “stick” back into the air, but will likely be a good fuel source for thunderstorms to pop in the afternoon.

Our exclusive Storm Potential product within our in-house FutureScan model is showing enough instability by 3 PM Saturday afternoon to allow thunderstorms to develop (the darker the colors, the better chance there is of thunderstorm development).

The main timing window for the strongest activity will be between 4 and 8 PM.

Within any of these storms, there potential does exist for some damaging straight-line winds. There could be some hail as well however, we do not believe hail will be the big issue this event.

Make sure you have a good way of getting warnings tomorrow afternoon. Every home should have a NOAA Weather Radio. Beyond the weather radio, there are some good apps for smartphones that push warnings.

Memorial Day is looking great with temps in the lower 70’s under partly to mostly sunny skies. We crank up the heat and the humidity once again as we head into mid next week with a chance for scattered showers and storms each day.
