ELLERY – The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office said they responded to a complaint of a 28-foot cabin cruiser disabled and taking on water about 1/2 mile off from shore near the I-86 overlook Sunday afternoon.

A passing boat reportedly took the vessel occupants to the shore. The Sheriff’s Office Navigation division responded to the area of the disabled vessel and reportedly found that it had sank with the bow of the boat protruding out of the water.

The Sheriff’s Office Navigation Division was assisted Monday by the Chautauqua County Hazmat team and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Spill Response Team in placing booms around the sunken vessel to collect any fluids that may leak into the water. The Sheriffs Office is advising boaters to use caution when in the area. A

An attempt to recover the vessel will be made on Tuesday depending on weather conditions, according to the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office.
