COI Awarded $2.5 Million HeadStart Grant

JAMESTOWN – Chautauqua Opportunities Inc., has been given a $2,592,917 grant to provide funding to provide Head Start and Early Head Start services, according to Rep. Tom Reed.

“We care about ensuring our children receive a quality education,” Reed said.

“This grant enables Chautauqua Opportunities Inc. to provide Head Start and Early Head Start programs to promote school readiness of young children from low-income families. We are proud to support programs like these that give kids the tools they need to succeed in school.”

“COI has provided Head Start and Early Head Start services since they were first implemented, in 1965 and 1993 respectively,” said CEO of Chautauqua Opportunities Inc., Diane Hewitt-Johnson. “We focus on providing high quality services and curriculum that are critical in meeting standards for early learning outcomes. The ultimate goals are to ensure the children are school ready (kindergarten ready) and families are fully engaged in their children’s lives. We are proud to continue serving the residents of Chautauqua County with the assistance of this funding. For the 2019-2020 program year, the agency will serve 360 children ages 3-5 with Head Start services, and 82 children ages birth – 2.”

Head Start promotes the school readiness of young children from low-income families through agencies in their local community. Head Start and Early Head Start programs support the comprehensive development of children from birth to age 5, in centers, child care partner locations, and in their own homes. Head Start services include early learning, health, and family well-being.
