State Trooper Hits Van, Causing Crash On I-90

SHERIDAN – An investigation by New York State Police reportedly revealed that a trooper is to blame for a serious motor vehicle crash on the westbound lanes of I-90 between exits 58 and 59 Monday afternoon.

The crash happened just after 1 p.m. while Trooper Stephen C. Barker, of State Police Buffalo, was responding to a report of a property damage accident.

Police said, through investigation, they found that Trooper Barker crashed into the rear of a Dodge Caravan that was slowing with traffic.





Two passengers in the van, George E. Cole, 66, of Arcade, and Timothy W. McCann, 70, of Depew, were airlifted from the scene to Erie County Medical Center.

Cole is currently listed in serious condition while McCann is in critical condition.

Trooper Barker, Harry E. Gibbons, 75, of Irving, the van’s operator and Terrance W. Marsha, 70, of Orchard Park, another passenger in the van, were transported to Brooks Memorial Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.





















The final van passenger, David A. Jordan, 72, of East Aurora, was taken to Mercy Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Police said the westbound lanes were closed for over four hours while Troop A’s Collision Reconstruction Unit investigated the scene.
