MAYVILLE – Officials in Chautauqua County have opened more than a dozen cooling centers to help residents avoid heat related illnesses this weekend.

In Jamestown, the James Prendergast Library will be open Friday until 5 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to help residents stay cool.

County officials say in addition to official cooling centers, residents may want to visit local shopping malls or stores to get a break from the heat.

Health experts say electric fans may provide comfort, but when the temperature is in the high 90s, they will not prevent heat-related illness.

Taking a cool shower or moving to an air-conditioned place is the best way to cool off quickly.

County health officials also remind residents to limit outdoor activity to morning and evening hours, cut down on exercise during the heat, be sure to wear sunscreen to prevent sunburns and most importantly stay hydrated.

Officials also remind drivers to not leave children or pets in vehicles. They say cars quickly heat up to dangerous temperatures, even with a window cracked open.
