First Defense: Dangerous Heat Index Levels Continue Into Saturday With Afternoon Storm Chances

JAMESTOWN – The hottest air so far this summer has arrived to Western New York with dangerous heat indices through Saturday evening. However, a big turn around will come our way next next week with cooler temperatures and lower humidity.

The National Weather Service maintains the Excessive Heat Warning for Niagara, Orleans, Monroe and thee the counties that border Lake Ontario until 6 p.m. Saturday. The Heat Advisory for the remainder of Western New York until 6 p.m. Saturday.

The NOAA Storm Prediction Center has also outlined the entire region under a standard Slight Risk (level 2/5) for severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening. Should any storm become severe, the main threats will be brief gusty winds and heavy rainfall. A touch of hail is also possible.

The highest levels of heat and humidity will be now until Saturday evening. Actual air temperatures will range from 85 at the immediate Lake Erie Shoreline to 94 well inland. Heat indices will range between 94 to 103 across the Southern Tier and Northwestern Pennsylvania, upwards of 110 degrees Buffalo northward.

Both Friday and Saturday will see afternoon and evening thunderstorms chances. With the very tropical and soupy humidity in the air, that produces the perfect environment for scattered showers and storms to pop up in random nature during the peak heating hours of the day. Neither day will be a total washout with plenty of dry time in between.

A big shift in the upper air pattern will occur next week, bringing much more refreshing and cooler air to much of the eastern two thirds of the country. This will equate out to below average much much of next week with very comfortable humidity.
