ALBANY – New York is one of six recipients of federal funding to study the health effects of a class of chemicals once used in nonstick cookware, firefighting foam and many other products.

The study will look at the potential effects of exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, collectively called PFAS.

Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand on Friday announced nearly $900,000 in funding to support a New York state health study of the chemicals.

Drinking water in Hoosick Falls, Newburgh and Suffolk County has been contaminated by the toxic chemicals.

Funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will be used to expand a biomonitoring program to assess the impact of PFAS exposure.
