JAMESTOWN – A downtown Jamestown park was closed Tuesday evening due to structural issues.
The property owner, Jamestown Renaissance Corporation, says Potter’s Terrace, also known as AIDS Memorial Park or Wood Park, was originally built over a basement of a burned down building.
The deck over the past years has gone into decay.
In an interview with WNYNewsNow JRC Executive Director Pete Miraglia says an architect found that a number of nuts and bolts holding the deck together have begun to rust.
“You’ve got a big cavity down there anywhere from seven to ten feet deep,” said Miraglia. “To address this properly we will probably have to fill it in,”
Miraglia said he will be reaching out to the community for input on re-establishing the site and trying to find funding to fix the structural issues or redevelop the park entirely.
The park was originally dedicated as a memorial for AIDS victims.
Next week JRC officials will be covering the fence with an aerial shot of downtown Jamestown to make the site more environmentally friendly for those in the area.
