HANOVER – Charges are pending against the driver of a boat that reportedly crashed in Sunset Bay early Monday morning.

The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office says they responded to a report of a boat crash at the break wall on Sunset Bay Monday around 2:25 a.m.

Deputies said upon arrival they found a 23′ cuddy cabin boat grounded on top of the break wall with no one around. Multiple agencies searched the area for the missing boater.

The search was called off just before 6 a.m. when the boat’s occupants were located safely on shore.

Deputies said boat’s driver, Scott Schieder, 54, Cheektowaga, could now face charges related to the crash. Schieder reportedly suffered minor injuries and, according to deputies, left the scene without reporting the incident.

Arraignments are now in the works to remove the boat from the area.

Sunset Bay Fire Department, Lake Erie Beach Fire Department, Erie County Air One, Chautauqua County Water Emergency Team and the Chautauqua County Navigation Unit assisted at the scene.
