HANOVER – The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office Navigation Division has charged a Cheektowaga man following an investigation into a boating crash in the area of the break wall in Sunset Bay that occurred in the early morning hours of Aug. 5.

Deputies said the operator, Scott Schieder, 54, and Robert J. Benger, 40, of Blasdell, left the scene without reporting the crash. Both men reportedly sustained minor injuries.

Deputies reportedly located Benger on shore following an hours-long search by emergency crews.

Schieder was charged with failure to report a boating accident, imprudent speed and reckless operation. He was issued tickets and will appear in the Town of Hanover Court at a later date.

The boat was removed from the break wall.
