WESTERN NEW YORK – Congressman Tom Reed says a nearly $400,000 grant to help further develop access to high speed internet within his congressional district does more than just improve resident’s quality of life.

Reed says in today’s modern economy the next great innovator could live anywhere, from the big cities on the east coast, to the small towns of Western New York.

“Where that innovation, American entrepreneurial spirit could be sparked, is not limited to urban settings, city settings, universities or college campuses,” Reed explained. “It is becoming accessible to the small homes of Western New York and very rural areas that otherwise would not have access to the infrastructure help.”

This week, the Congressman announced he secured a $395,000 grant for the Southwest New York Wireless Broadband project that aims to provide 25 mbps internet service to 2,300 household and 206 businesses currently without access to it.

Reed said crews will use the money to purchase and install fixed wireless broadband equipment and back haul fiber at eight cell towers in Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, and Allegany counties.

He said the area’s hilly land and low population density has discouraged private sector investors from deploying broadband which left thousands without access to reliable high-speed internet.

In addition to Reed’s funding, local sources will provide $399,000 in funding, bringing the total project funding to $794,000, the Congressman said.
