Director Brad Bentley, in a phone interview with WNYNewsNow, said difficulties with soil conditions and additional construction activities delayed work.

Bentley says crews are prepared to work in colder weather to re-open the bridge, however extreme winter weather may impact the revised schedule.

“There will be some additional concrete work and they have what’s called blankets that are basically effectively heaters that allow the concrete to dry properly and harden up,” explained Bentley. “In addition to that, we made arrangements to have a blacktop plant open later in the year than normal to get the binder coat down.”

Bentley said crews will likely have to pave the top coat of blacktop early next year.

Harrison Street between Foote Avenue and Main Street is currently closed to thru traffic. A detour utilizing Foote Avenue, Main Street, 2nd and 4th Streets is posted.

A separate truck detour is posted as well due to low clearances on the Railroad viaduct on Foote Avenue and Main Street.

Bentley says he understands that the bridge replacement project has inconvenienced the public and is making efforts to minimize the additional length of the time needed to complete the project.

The new bridge is expected to last around 80 years.
