NEW YORK – The number of Americans who survive a lung cancer diagnosis is rising.
According to a new report, the disease remains the leading cause of cancer deaths nationwide, but the five-year survival rate climbed 26-percent.
The rate of new diagnoses has dropped 19-percent.
The American Lung Association says an early diagnosis can make survival rates about five times higher.
Experts also note that most cases are caught at a very late stage.
People at high risk, including current or longtime former smokers, are encouraged to talk to their doctor about yearly screening.
The report, “State of Lung Cancer,” was published Wednesday by the American Lung Association.
