Lake Effect Snow Showers Develop Tonight, Last Through The Next Few Days

JAMESTOWN – After a quiet and cloudy afternoon, the Lake Effect Snow Machine will start up once again and lead to some accumulating snow through the end of the week. A brief pattern swap could possibly bring a shot of milder air into the region by early next week.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Lake Effect Snow for Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Southern Erie and Wyoming Counties, effective at 10 a.m. Wednesday and running through 10 a.m. Thursday morning.

Clouds have thickened up across the region this afternoon so expect that cloud cover to take us through the afternoon. Highs will range 30 to 36 with a west-southwest wind 6 to 12 MPH.

Tonight will start mainly dry but snow showers will develop though the overnight as the lake snow band gets going. The band will first setup shop near the Buffalo metro area and slowly sag its way southward through the night. Any accumulation by the morning drive will be light; around an inch with the best chance for that one inch will be along the hillier terrian. Lows 28 to 34.

Lake snow squalls will pick up in coverage and intensity and last through the day. Daytime snow accumulation will likely range between 3 to 5 inches with the highest totals on the hills, 1 to 2 inches across lower elevations. Highs 30 to 36 with brisk breeze 10 to 20 MPH.

The more widespread of the lake snow will begin to taper off into pockets of lake snow through the day Thursday. It twill still be chilly with highs in the lower 30s. Wind gust could reach upwards to 30 MPH in the afternoon.

Storm totals through Thursday will likely range between 6 to 8 inches on the hills and 3 to 5 across the lower elevations. When it comes to snow, always focus on the lowest number in the range, not the highest.

Lake snow will continue in pockets Friday, possibly leading up to another 1 to 3 inches within the heavier squalls. Highs lower 30’s.

While there will be a good supply of sunshine on Saturday, a cold north wind will keep most areas in the upper 20’s through the day.

As we head into he second part of the weekend, a slight turnaround in the petter on aloft might lead to a brief stretch of milder temperatures Sunday and through early next week. Temps will make it into he lower 40’s with some mid 40’s possible. However, while some of the longer-range data suggests that warmer air will stick around for awhile down the road, I’m personally not buying into that idea quite yet.

As you well know, this is all out in “Voodoo Country” and things could and likely will change between now and then.
