ORCHARD PARK – Elbert Dubenion, a former wide receiver for the Buffalo Bills, passed away on Thursday due to complications from Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease at the age of 86.

Nicknamed “Golden Wheels”, Dubenion was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the 14th round out of Bluffton University in 1959.

Buffalo signed Dubenion in 1960 after being released by Cleveland without ever playing a game for them.

In his nine-year career from 1960 to 1968 all with the Bills, Dubenion caught 294 passes for 5,294 yards and 35 touchdowns.

Dubenion went to one Pro Bowl in 1964, a season in which he finished with 42 receptions for 1,139 yards and 10 touchdowns, leading the league with 27.1 yards per catch.

Dubenion was also part of the Bills back-to-back AFL Championship Titles in 1964 and 1965.

Before the Super Bowl was created, teams in the American Football League and National Football League played for separate championships before the league merger in 1966.

After his playing career ended, Dubenion worked as a scout for Buffalo, the Miami Dolphins and Atlanta Falcons.

Dubenion made the Buffalo Bills Wall of Honor in 1995.
