WASHINGTON – The number of Americans who have died from alcohol-related problems annually have more than doubled between 1999 and 2017.

Researchers from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism used death certificates to determine the number of alcohol-related deaths.

Determined the number of alcohol-related deaths increased 50.9 percent from 16.9 to 25.5 per one-hundred-thousand. That’s a loss of nearly one million Americans in that time period.

In 2017 alone, 2.6 percent of about two-point-eight million deaths in the United States were alcohol related.

Nearly half resulted from liver disease or overdoses on alcohol alone, or mixed with other drugs.

The rate of deaths was higher for men, people among the ages of 55 and 64 and among non-Hispanic American Indians and Alaska Natives.

But the largest annual increase in deaths was among non-Hispanic white women.
