First Defense: Lake Effect Snow Develops Late Today, Bitterly Cold For Valentines Day

JAMESTOWN – The first part of the storm is over as the widespread snow showers will continue to wind down this afternoon. The second piece however, is just getting started with developing lake effect and some of the coldest air so far this winter.

The storm system that has been responsible for the widespread snow last night and this morning is moving out towards the east this afternoon. Any of the leftover snow showers will come an end early this afternoon with a brief break in the coverage. Limited lake effect snow showers will then develop with a robust west to northwest wind moving across Lake Erie. Highs today will range 30 to 36.

Lake effect snow will continue throughout the night with accumulations ranging from 2 to 4 inches in the most organized snow bands. As an Arctic front plows through, temperatures will begin to free-fall by morning. Most of the area should end up in the single digits with lower teens possible right at the Lake Erie shoreline.

With that robust west wind 10 to 15 MPH, wind chill values will likely drop sub zero overnight into Friday morning. Layers will be needed for the morning commute.

Lake effect snow will continue in pockets Friday morning, later cutting out for the afternoon hours. However, we will struggle to maintain a high temperature in the double digits. With a north-northwest wind 10 to 15 MPH, wind chills will drop into the single digits to sub zero in spots throughout the day.

Low temperatures tomorrow night will be will dependent on how much cloud cover will be leftover. While we’re keeping our average low near the zero degree mark, if we can get a mostly clear sky, the potential is there for many areas inland away from the lake to drop below zero.

The winds will still be a factor through the night, producing a very bitter wind chill of zero to 10 below zero by Saturday morning.

While Saturday will start very frigid, we will rebound into the upper 20’s with the add of plentiful sunshine through the day.

There is a small chance of a rain or snow shower on Sunday with highs near average. We’ll seek out a dry day on Monday before another system arrives for the middle of next week.

Out ahead of the front, temps will return into the 40’s on Tuesday before dropping into the upper 20’s on Wednesday with a few scattered snow showers.
