First Defense: Bitter Cold Continues Tonight, Much Better Over The Weekend

JAMESTOWN –  We are in the midst of the coldest air so far this season across Western New York along with a bitterly cold wind chill. However the cold is only short-lived as we bounce back over the weekend.

After a cold start to the day across much of the area, we will only make it into the lower to mid teens through the afternoon. Even though the sun will be out from time to time, a cold north to northwest wind will not help in the temperature department.

Wind chills will range from zero to 5  below. Air temps will range from 9 on the hills to 16 near the Lake Erie shoreline.

With a mostly to partly clear sky tonight, temperatures will likely slip back quite a bit by morning. Lows will mostly range from zero in the valleys to to 11 at the Lake Erie shoreline. However, we would not be shocked if some of the deepest valleys inland away from the Lake drops below zero by morning.

Even though winds will not be all that strong, 5 to 10 MPH, that will be just enough to produce a nasty wind chill index. Everybody will drop sub zero with some negative doubled digits likely.

While it will be quite cold, we will not be cold enough to warrant the issuance of a Wind Chill Advisory by the National Weather Service in Buffalo. A wind chill of at least 15 below zero must be forecast.

We will rebound nicely in the afternoon on Saturday with the aid of plentiful sunshine throughout the day. Highs 27 to 33.

The majority of the day on Sunday will be dry but there could be a few scattered snow showers in the afternoon. Highs int he mid 30’s.

Another storm system with a strong front will come our way by the middle of next week. Out ahead of the front, we’ll spike well into the 40’s on Tuesday with widespread rain showers. As the front moves through, we’ll drop back into the mid to upper 20’s both Wednesday and Thursday with a few snow showers both days.
