Man Arrested Following Altercation With Bank Employee Over Mask Wearing Policy

LAKEWOOD – A 80-year-old Mayville man was arrested after police say he got into an altercation over not wearing his mask while visiting a bank last week.

Lakewood-Busti Police say Gerald Hewes Jr. entered the Key Bank on Fairmount Avenue in Lakewood last Wednesday without a mask. When an employee noticed, they told him to put one on, or leave the business.

Officers say Hews responded by screaming obscenities and holding the woman up against a glass cubicle.

When officers arrived, they say Hewes continually interfered with them.

He was eventually placed under arrest, but not without allegedly resisted and fighting with police.

Hewes is charged with harassment, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration. Officers say he was released with an appearance ticket.
