ALBANY – State Senator George Borrello is seeking answers for those who have lost loved ones in nursing homes due to COVID-19.

Borrello recently observed a presentation from DOH Commissioner Howard Zucker during a State Senate Legislative meeting. Zucker and Governor Andrew Cuomo have come under fire from several Republican lawmakers for their nursing home policies during the COVID-19 pandemic.

WNYNewsNow asked Borrello whether or not he believes the Cuomo administration is responsible for the deaths. The Republican Senator says that action needs to be taken to find more information about what and who are responsible for the nursing home deaths in New York State.

“That’s why we need an investigation,” Borrello said. “I’m not qualified to say if that’s the case or not. All I know is nursing home deaths here in New York State are a large percentage of the overall deaths. The numbers that we are getting, many believe are incorrect. For the most part, people believe they are actually understated and that’s really concerning.”

Borrello says the known number of deaths is around 6,500, but adds that the actual number of deaths could be as high as 10-11,000 individuals.
