MAYVILLE – The Chautauqua County Department of Health says a more than two-month long boil water order near Cassadaga has been lifted.

The order for customers in the Pomfret Water District Lily Dale supply first went in to effect on Tuesday, July 14. After samples were collected this week, health officials determined the water is safe to drink.

Since July, a chlorine booster station has been installed to eliminate bacteria found in the pipes. If water appears brown, officials urge residents to run cold water until it appears clear. If the water has a strong odor of chlorine, letting it sit in an open pitcher before using will allow the chlorine to dissipate.

Meanwhile, a similar order in nearby Fredonia continues. Leaders there say two filter beds have been replaced and are in service, while a third bed is in process of being replaced, with a fourth to be immediately after.

The village hopes that cloudiness in the water will continue to drop as the filters are installed. After further testing, they expect to lift the order.

Bottles of water will be distributed to residents in need this Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.

The Fredonia boil water order was first put in place on Thursday, September 10.
