SALAMANCA — Employees at the Salamanca Allegany Casino and Resort have been laid off as part of a system-wide layoff by the Seneca Gaming Corporation.

A casino spokesman declined to breakdown the action by casino or to elaborate beyond a previously released corporate statement.

The most recent jobs loss, 300 employees across the casinos in Salamanca, Buffalo and Niagara Falls, is in addition to 150 layoffs in August.

Corporation officials are blaming the COVID-19 pandemic for lower attendance at the three casinos, meaning a sharp loss in revenue.

Officials said they will work with the furloughed employees to try to place some in other positions across the company.

In 2008, the corporation laid off 210 employees across all three casinos. In addition, the company froze the salaries of employees making $70,000 a year or more, suspended year-end bonuses and cut senior managers’ pay by as much as 15 percent.
