MAYVILLE – Chautauqua County’s Sheriff says all inmates and staff at the county jail are undergoing rapid tested for COVID-19 after more than two dozen inmates and a guard tested positive for the virus.

Sheriff Jim Quattrone tells WNY News Now four inmates tested positive for the virus on Tuesday morning, which promoted the jail to test all 48 inmates and seven corrections staff working within the impacted unit.

He says the jail has taken steps to stop the spread ahead of today’s testing efforts.

“Chautauqua County Public Health and Chautauqua County Emergency Services Paramedics are assisting us with getting the samples, with Public Health running the testing, we hope to have that testing done by the end of the day,” said Sheriff Quattrone. “Currently we have inmates isolated as well as a lockdown so that no potential spread can continue with that lockdown.”

Quattrone says of the 26 inmates who tested positive, only one is showing symptoms of the virus.

He says the man is experiencing mild effects at this time.

Additionally, he says the correction officer who tested positive is recovering.

The Sheriff’s Office will continue to provide updates as testing is finished and more information is available.
