ALBANY – New York State Senator George Borrello is backing a resolution that would lift Governor Andrew Cuomo’s 11 p.m. curfew for bars and restaurants.

On Monday, New York State Senate and Assembly Republicans introduced a resolution to terminate his executive order that imposed the curfew.

Last week Cuomo lifted it altogether for gyms, casinos, movie theaters, bowling alleys, and billiard halls starting April 5, however he left the rule in place for bars and restaurants, saying it would be reevaluated next month.

“Without a doubt, the 11 p.m. curfew is one of the most glaring examples of an unjustifiable, unscientific edict,” said Borrello in a statement. “Yet, despite having no impact on the virus, the curfew has had a terrible impact on the bottom lines of countless small businesses in the hospitality industry and their hardworking employees by reducing the number of patrons they can serve each evening, compounding the effect of capacity limits.”

Borrello says the curfews are “disappearing” in neighboring states and New York needs to follow suit.

Legislative Republicans have been leading the charge to repeal the Governor’s emergency powers since last May.

Earlier this month the state house majority put forward a Democrat-negotiated bill with the Governor’s Office that was intended to remove Cuomo emergency powers, however, Borrello says that bill did not go far enough.

Under the bill that passed by directives already made by the Governor still remain in effect, and he maintains the ability to modify or extend them.
