MAYVILLE – Chautauqua County’s Health Director says new federal recommendations for schools is a step in the right direction.

Last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revised physical distancing recommendations from six feet to three feet between students in classrooms.

County Public Health Director Christine Schuyler says Chautauqua County children who have contracted COVID-19 were not sickened in school, but rather, got it from their families.

She is hopeful the vaccination process will remove that risk.

“The last year or so has been day-to-day changes in the landscape of COVID, and we are still there,” said Schuyler. “The vaccines are great, I’m hoping we can continue to get an increased supply of vaccine and get as many people vaccinated as possible, but at the same time it is going to take some time, and we don’t know yet what those implications are going to be for our kids.”

The County Health Department can not adopt the new guidance until the New York State Department of Health updates their recommendations.

So far, several local schools including Jamestown High School have reopened to some in-person learning utilizing a hybrid module.
