CHERRY CREEK – Residents in northern Chautauqua County are planning to protest against a “frac-out” from drilling related to the Cassadaga Wind Project.

Community members are slated to gather starting at 10 a.m. along Farrington Hallow Road near Plank Road in Cherry Creek.

Calls for concern started after a drilling incident that caused a heavy flow of mud in the area.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation says a frac-out can happen following a digging process known as boring, when drilling fluids are released on the topographic surface.

The DEC says the mud could impact fish if released into area water ways, however officials say drilling mud is not toxic or hazardous to the environment in general.

That is not sitting well with residents, who tell WNY News Now, the incident concerning because of its proximity to a wetland area.

In total, 48 turbines are part of the Cassadaga Wind Project that spans from the Towns of Cherry Creek to Charlotte.
