JAMESTOWN – For the first time in nearly two years baseball is returning to Russell E. Diethrick, Jr. Park in Jamestown.

The Jamestown Tarp Skunks will host the Batavia Muckdogs during their home opener at 7 p.m. Thursday.

The collegiate level baseball team is playing their first season under the new Tarp Skunk rebranding.  A name that has certainly captured the public’s attention since its announcement last year.

The Tarp Skunks’ director of business and sales operations, Jacob Kindberg, tells WNY News Now the home opener, which kicks off with a free live concert tailgate starting at 5 p.m., is not only celebrating the return of baseball to the area, but the history of the local ballpark.

“This is the 80th anniversary of the stadium, when it opened in 1941 it was Municipal Stadium, at the time Jamestown Falcons in the pony league were playing here,” explained Kindberg. “As our 80th birthday celebration this year, we are bringing back the Batavia Muckdogs for our first home game, they were the first away team in our first home game in 1941.”

Despite minor differences in seating arrangements, there will be accommodations for both those who are vaccinated and those who are not.
