ALBANY – Backlash from New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s alleged misconduct continues to grow, with one state Senator saying impeachment is likely the only option forward.
Cuomo’s reaction to New York Attorney General Letitia James’ report has drawn scrutiny from many, including one of his accusers Charlotte Bennett.
“He’s trying to justify himself by making me out to be someone who can’t tell the difference between sexual harassment and mentorship,” explained Bennet, who spoke with CBS Evening News. “The governor broke federal and state law when he sexually harassed me and current and former staffers and if he’s not willing to step down then we have a responsibility to act and impeach him.”
Impeachment is looking like the more likely option to pull Cuomo from his post, according to New York State Senator George Borrello.
“I don’t see this governor resigning, he considers himself to be a hero, he thinks the allegations against him are false,” Borrello told WNY News Now. “You saw his response, which I think was prepared before the statement was even out, clearly he is dug in and has no intention of resigning.”
The state’s impeachment inquiry group met late Tuesday, reviewing the evidence gathered by the AG’s probe.
Among those calling for the end of the Governor’s tenure, is President Joe Biden.
When asked about impeachment, Biden says, “Let’s take one thing at a time here. I think he should resign. I understand that the state legislature may decide to impeach. I don’t know that for a fact. I have not read all that data.”
However many, including Borrello, don’t think Cuomo will step aside.
“This just speaks to the type of person that he is at this point,” says Borrello. “He has a huge ego, I think some would declare him a sociopath, and ultimately he believes that what he has done isn’t wrong.”
The Senator saying, impeachment could distract from other issues happening in the state.
“How is this going to impact his ability to govern, how is it going to impact the future of our state at such a critical time right now,” asks Borrello. “How does this governor and the leadership in the assembly work together to address monumental issues to address the greater good?”
In addition to the Attorney General investigation, the Albany County District Attorney is probing his conduct as well. The county DA telling NBC News a criminal investigation is underway into the embattled Governor’s conduct.
