ALBANY – The State Senator who represents Chautauqua County is receiving recognition for his efforts to make a statewide farm-to-food bank program permanent.

Senator George Borrello was named by City & State to its “Agriculture Power 50” list for his work with the Nourish NY program.

Borrello, the ranking member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, shared the number 20 spot on the list with his colleague, Assemblywoman Catalina Cruz. The pair worked together to champion Nourish NY expansion.

“Thank you to City & State for including me on their ‘Agriculture Power 50’ list,’” Borrello said in a statement. “It’s an honor to be recognized and share the Number 20 spot with my friend and colleague, Assemblywoman Catalina Cruz.

“We fought for Nourish NY because it’s the right thing to do for New York’s farmers and families struggling with food insecurity,” furthered Borrello. “Our legislation to make Nourish NY permanent unanimously passed both houses of the Legislature and is waiting for Gov. Hochul’s signature.”

The farm-to-food bank program was drafted after he heard feedback from farmers and food banks alike last year. The two groups equally faced challenges during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, with farms having a tough time selling some products and food banks keeping their shelves stocked.

The Senator says over the past year, the effort has grown into a vital new channel for moving fresh farm products to those in need.
