JAMESTOWN – Over 200 area kids were given their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine during a clinic at SUNY JCC on Tuesday evening.

The kids received Pfizer’s two-dose shot, which is authorized for emergency use in children ages 5 to 11, along with a stuffed animal from the Chautauqua County Health Department.

“It was a little painful, it kinda (stung) a little bit but not that painful if you look away,” explained nine-year-old Gabriel.

While some parents may be hesitant to have their children vaccinated, Jamestown mother Corine Case says she is confident in the science.

“We did our research, we talked to doctors, and read articles and we felt that the rewards outweigh the risks at this point to get them vaccinated now,” said Case. “It is very safe, they were fine, they weren’t hurt when they were doing a shot or when they got the shot and we think that it’s just very important to protect them now and keep them safe and healthy.”

“It was really good, it didn’t hurt at all,” Cameron furthered. “I think it’s important because I did not want to quarantine and be away from my friends, and other sports.”

Around 208 children were vaccinated during the clinic, with 140 kids registered for Saturday’s encore at SUNY Fredonia. Appointments are still available online at chqgov.com.

“I didn’t really know what to expect today as far as numbers go, it is a very controversial topic to get kids vaccinated at this age group, so I really wasn’t sure what to expect, but I’m really glad to see the turn out here tonight, and again it’s not just about the kids that are getting the shots tonight, but also protecting those can’t,” said Case.

Vaccines are provided for children at no cost. Their parent or guardian must be present and bring a government-issued ID card. Every person is required to wear a mask.
