NORTH EAST, Pa. (Erie News Now) – A local World War II veteran was laid to rest this week.
Richard Donnelly served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a WWII Veteran.
He witnessed the raising of the U.S. Flag during the battle for Mount Surabachi at Iwo Jima.
He joined the Marines when he was 17 years-old, along with 5 of his brothers.
He was also a member of the Marine Corps Association, Marine Corps League and the Disabled American Veterans.
Following the War, he returned to Sharon, Pa and married the love of his life, Edna Robbins.
He worked at the Hammermill Paper Company and retired as Manager of Corporate Salary Compensation in 1991.
He was preceded in death by his wife Edna and eleven brothers and sisters.
