BUFFALO, N.Y. (WENY) – Truck drivers heading across the Canadian border will now be required to show proof of COVID vaccination.

According to WKBW, Canada’s Public Health Agency said any foreign national truck driver who does not give proof of vaccination cannot cross into Canada.

A survey by the American Trucking Association said only about 50% of drivers are vaccinated.

Another survey says 60% of the unvaccinated don’t plan on getting it at all.

President of ROAR Logistics Robert Rich says two-thirds of freight that goes between the U.S. and Canada is by land and that the mandate is happening too quickly.

Truck drivers aren’t the only ones being impacted either.

Natalie Simpson from the UB School Of Management says the move could drive up costs for Canadians as well as create delays for Americans looking to use Canada as a short cut.

The border agency says they’ll monitor wait times and adjust staffing accordingly to minimize delays.

Truck drivers have to enter their vaccine information on ArriveCAN.
