JAMESTOWN – Jamestown Police Lieutenant Sam Piazza is once again sounding off against a shortage of police officers for the Jamestown Police Department.

Piazza spoke during Monday evening’s City Council work session. He explains that the shortage, a problem he considers to be nationwide, is preventing the department from operating from a position of strength for the community, especially as the caseload continues to grow.

“Again, we’re short staffed. How can we continue to do what we need to do?,” Piazza said. “This often contributes to retention and recruitment. This is not just a problem in the City of Jamestown. This is a problem all across the country. You see it on TV, you see everywhere else. We’ve talked about it at city council meetings, we’ve talked about it in other private negotiations. It’s here gentlemen, it’s here.”

Specific numbers regarding police calls and arrests were requested by Councilwoman At-Large Kim Ecklund.

Piazza furthers that officers, in the past, have moved to other municipalities in an effort to avoid stress. He says that a full department would have 65 officers in the City of Jamestown, and they’re only currently at 56.

Additionally, Piazza says that the department has other officers who are eligible for retirement.
