ERIE, Pa. (Erie News Now) – If you know or have a loved one that needs at-home care, then you know how important it is to have good help.

But it can be scary when it seems like there’s not enough people to care for those who need help caring for themselves.

“It’s terrifying to know there are a number of people in Erie without the care they need every day”, said Brady Himes, the Branch Manager for Help at Home.

It’s stressful for Himes to organize schedules to make sure clients are getting the care they need when she doesn’t have enough people to work.

“We absolutely have noticed a shortage it’s been difficult to have, it seems as though everyone quit working during the pandemic and we are having a hard time getting back to that”, said Himes.

With a lack of workers, she said hiring events are part of the new norm, which gives people like Sara Crosby a chance to help someone in need.

Crosby explained why she’s committed to helping those at home, “Because it could be your family members that need the care and you want somebody with a passionate heart to take care of them.”

Crosby said she’s done this job for years and a smile makes the long days worth it, “Just the smile of the people I’m taking care of, just to see them have a brighter day is enough for me”

Whether its people who have cared for others for years or people coming through the doors for the first time looking to help others, they all have the same goal, help those in need.

Kayla Munsch has a different need for working at Help at Home. She’s worked to take care of her brother for the past two and a half years. “It’s like a struggle because you never know, he has a brain injury. He still uses a walker, he could fall anytime, so it’s a lot of stress, but it’s also awesome that I’m doing it. Me and my boyfriend are doing it, so it’s nice”, said Munsch.

These shortages add another layer of stress to an already difficult field.

Help at Home holds these hiring events every second Wednesday of the month, so if you are looking to apply for a job, there’s still plenty of opportunities. To learn more, click here.
