RIPLEY – A massive search is underway for a fishing boat captain who fell from his craft into Lake Erie Thursday morning off the shoreline in northwestern Chautauqua County.

The county dive team, technical rescue crew, Chautauqua County EMS and Ripley Fire Department responded to the call around 8:30 a.m.

Searchers tell us the charter boat captain fell into the water while reportedly trying to unhook a fish and did not resurface.

Four others on the boat called 911 for help. The group was rescued by first responders and brought back to shore.

The boat is about a half-mile off shore. First responders are staging and launching their rescue crafts from the Barcelona Harbor in Westfield.

The U.S. Coast Guard sent a helicopter to assist in search operations as well.

This is a developing story and will be updated when new information becomes available. WNY News Now’s Justin Gould contributed to this report.
