SENECA NATION – The Seneca Nation says they have reached an agreement with the New York State Thruway Authority to fix parts of Interstate 90.
Nation President Rickey Armstrong announced Wednesday the nation and Thruway Authority will work together to repair a five-mile stretch of I-90 that runs through the Cattaraugus Reservation.
“The Thruway Authority has indicated an aggressive work schedule for completing the first phase of repair work over the next several weeks,” said Armstrong during a morning press conference. “The Seneca Nation Transportation Department will coordinate with the Thruway Authority to make sure that happens. A second phase, including more milling and repaving will follow.”
Armstrong said he hopes the work can be completed before winter, although he said work may continue into early next spring.
Last week Armstrong sent a letter to Thruway Authority Commissioner Matthew Driscoll seeking to get work started.
Previously, elected officials from across Chautauqua and Cattaraugus County joined Congressman Tom Reed (R) to call on New York to fix the state’s crumbling infrastructure.
Reed praised the Nation and Governor Cuomo for coming to an agreement to fix the crumbling portion of I-90 to guarantee the safety of the traveling public.
“Fixing the road is the right thing to do for the safety of the travelling public,” said Reed. “We were happy to lead the public outcry over the road conditions for the hardworking people we care about and represent, and we will continue to be your voice in both Albany and Washington, D.C.”
New York State’s Thruway Authority responded to Reed’s claims almost a month later in a letter from the Thruway Authority’s Executive Director to the Nation.
