FREDONIA – The man shot to death in December by Fredonia Police Officer Nathan Scriven was 23-year-old George Penev.

Chautauqua County District Attorney Patrick Swanson confirmed the news, originally reported by the Buffalo News, to WNYNewsNow Tuesday.

Swanson said the family originally asked him not to disclose the name, but the family ended up confirming the name to the Buffalo News.

Swanson said the investigation is ongoing. The DA added that he hopes to make the investigation process transparent and thorough.

An attorney hired by the village police union said the man was holding a knife and refused to stop advancing towards an officer.

The man was covered in blood from a self-inflicted wound. The department nor the lawyer would identify the officer.
