MAYVILLE – City of Jamestown Ward 1 incumbent Brent Sheldon was re-election Monday afternoon following an absentee vote count in Mayville.

Chautauqua County Board of Election officials say Sheldon, a Republican, defeated Democrat challenger Timothy Smeal by 19 votes.

Sheldon had 399 votes while Smeal had 380 votes.

On election night, Sheldon’s race was ‘too close to call’ with the councilman seven votes ahead of Smeal.

The win secured a Republican majority in city council. Republican Councilman Tony Dolce will likely be elected as council president next year.
