Crews say an unattended torch left on the first floor of the multi-story house caused the blaze that was first reported around 6:40 a.m. at 614 Spring St.

A woman who lives across the street says she woke up to the sound of glass breaking and a man screaming for help. Officials say the man was the only occupant of the home and was not hurt.

The structure was later demolished after it was deemed unsafe to enter.

The Blackwell Chapel AME Zion Church, located next to the fire, was not damaged.
